Lara Meyer

Gisborne

Based in: Tairāwhiti Gisborne.

Broader area of facilitation: I love interacting with people and to travel, so as well as online nationwide, I’m happy to host face-to-face sessions anywhere.

Sorted at Work sessions I'm available to facilitate: All of them.

Cultural background: English is my first language and I’m currently working hard to become proficient in te reo Māori.

Professional qualifications: A Diploma of Teaching, Postgraduate Diploma in Education, Master of Education and New Zealand Diploma in Te Reo Rumaki.

What inspired me to become a Sorted at Work facilitator: I’ve been in love with helping people learn my whole life; I have a compulsion to help in any way I can. One of the components of general wellbeing is financial security, so I want to assist people to achieve that for themselves and their whānau.

What people can expect from my sessions: I’m friendly and polite, knowledgeable and well prepared. I keep to time. I’m really good at ‘reading the room.’ I encourage participants to interact with each other. We’ll have a good time learning together. We’ll leave as friends.

What I enjoy most about being a Sorted at Work facilitator: I love meeting new people and hearing their stories, and knowing I’m doing my part to support the financial wellbeing of other New Zealanders.

Is now the ideal time for people to learn more about making the most of their money through the Sorted at Work programme? Absolutely! With the rising cost of living and economic uncertainty, gaining the skills to make smarter money decisions has never been more important. It’s the perfect time for New Zealanders to take control of their financial future.

What are some of the lightbulb moments you’ve seen people experience in the sessions you facilitate? One of the biggest shifts happens when people realise they need to take care of their ‘80-year-old self’; most quickly set about upping their KiwiSaver contributions. Another common breakthrough is when people identify their spending ‘leaks’. I’ve seen people discover they’re spending hundreds – sometimes thousands! – of dollars a year on things they don’t really need. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people walk away from a session feeling empowered and excited about their financial future.

How do you and the programme make learning about financial matters more interesting than participants might expect? First off, I bring plenty of humour into my sessions – after all, we’re there to learn together and for a good time. I also make a point of learning and using people’s names, because nothing makes finance feel more personal than actually making it personal

Why is it so worthwhile for workplaces to provide Sorted at Work sessions for their staff? Providing Sorted at Work sessions helps staff reduce financial stress and feel more confident about their future, leading to a happier, more focused and productive team. When employees are financially well, they can bring their best selves to work, supporting a positive ripple effect across the entire workplace.
