Heather Allott

Wellington

Based in: Wellington.

Broader area of facilitation: I’m available to facilitate face-to-face workshops in Wellington and the greater Wellington area, including Kāpiti Coast and Hutt Valley, and in Marlborough as well. I enjoy delivering our seminars and courses in person but am equally happy to do any of the webinar series online for teams that have embraced flexible working arrangements or are not all in one location.

Sorted at Work sessions I'm available to facilitate: All of them.

Professional qualifications: I started an accounting degree but realised we’re not all academics, so entered banking and completed a banking certificate instead. I also hold a certificate from the New Zealand Payroll Practitioners Association.

What inspired me to become a Sorted at Work facilitator: Twenty-eight years in banking highlighted for me how little financial literacy was valued as part of our overall education system, and also its importance in enabling more of our community to live financially stress-free lives and enter retirement with better financial security. I became passionate about seeing others succeed and gain confidence through learning, be it about money or how to navigate a computer, so was excited to join the Sorted facilitator team in 2015.

What people can expect from my sessions: I think learning should be fun, interactive and accessible, as we all learn in different ways. Expect some sharing of examples and relatable stories, some reading material and some online tools and activities too.

What I enjoy most about being a Sorted at Work facilitator: I enjoy finding a connection with people and seeing them growing in confidence during workshops – it’s such a privilege. When participants share their experiences with the group, it provides a wonderful opportunity for us all to learn from a different perspective, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity.

Is financial education as boring as it sounds to some? Not when you engage a Sorted at Work facilitator! We’re all about making learning together engaging and fun. You never know what you might discover; I’m always amazed that even after more than 30 years in finance, I also come away having learned something new from participants through the sharing of our real-life experiences.

What do you like most about the Sorted at Work programme? Finance and money shouldn’t be intimidating or confusing. The Sorted programme breaks down topics into simple, practical steps, cuts out jargon to make financial information easy to understand, and supports participants’ learning with the free informative, interactive resources and tools on Sorted.org.nz

Why is it so worthwhile for workplaces to provide these sessions for their staff? Investing in your teams financial education takes you a step beyond simply paying them by supporting their long-term financial wellbeing in a really positive way. In workshops, I see participants stress levels reduce and their confidence grow as they realise they have support from others and can take charge of their finances. Even small changes can be enough to put us in control of our money and help us achieve our goals.

How might you advise employers to decide which session(s) to book for their team? Have a quick chat to a Sorted at Work facilitator, who will be able to guild you as to which session will be the most beneficial for your employees, whether a short course from the Money Bites series or a more in-depth workshop. We’re here to help you identify where your people are on their financial journey and match that with the resources we offer.
